As a featured writer in the 2023 Desert Nights, Rising Stars Writers Conference hosted by Arizona State University, I taught my first 90-min craft lecture and workshop on generating and researching ideas for grounded, socially-engaged speculative fiction. I went all in on a 40-slide PowerPoint deck and writing prompts. My students said they generated ideas for stories that they wanted to develop further, which was a proud moment. Special thanks to Professor/award-winning author Matt Bell for including me.

Almost a year after launch, THE EFFORT is now popping up in feeds related to the new satire DON’T LOOK UP and the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope from the spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. Happy to be relevant. Check out NBC NEWS option piece “Netflix's 'Don't Look Up' is the big asteroid of doom we deserve” by culture critic Noah Berlatsky, who gives the book a big shout out!

THE EFFORT is up for consideration in The Ray Bradbury Prize for Science Fiction, Fantasy & Speculative Fiction category of the 2021 Los Angeles Times Book Prizes. Bradbury's work both predicted and prevented the future, and this award seeks out writers with the same mission. (Wish me luck!)

A Washington Post article reported on the fly-by of “city-killer” Asteroid 2019 OK on July 25, 2019—exactly five days before the alternate timeline of THE EFFORT begins. I was pretty damn close!

Oliver Gallmeister, of Gallmeister, has acquired the French rights to THE EFFORT in a preemptive bid through foreign rights representative Caitlin Mahony, WME. Oliver focuses almost exclusively in American fiction and loves a quality page-turner.

Since 2006, the Gallmeister editions are dedicated to discovering the many facets of American literature, becoming the only French publisher to specialize exclusively in this field. From east to west, American writers describe and question the beauties and contradictions of their vast territory and its inhabitants.

Susanne Stark of dtv has acquired the German rights to THE EFFORT in a preemptive bid through foreign rights representative Caitlin Mahony, WME. Susanne is launching a new imprint called Bold with a focus on thrilling, exciting, and sometimes dark fiction.

dtv is one of the largest independent publishers in German-speaking countries and is regularly represented on the top spots of bestseller lists. The spectrum of the dtv program includes international and German-language fiction, non-fiction, guidebooks, children's and youth books as well as literature for young adults.

Karen Kosztolnyik, VP, Editor-in-Chief at Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group, has acquired the First North American Serial Rights to THE EFFORT in a preemptive bid. Karen’s reputation carries a lot of weight, so I’m thrilled and grateful that she will lead the editing process and book launch.

Hachette Book Group (HBG) is a leading US trade publisher and a division of the third largest trade and educational book publisher in the world, Hachette Livre. A global publishing company based in France, Hachette Livre is a subsidiary of the French media company, Lagardère.
